Tonight’s Red is a really enjoyable high quality wine.
It’s a Grenache Shiraz Matoro (GSM) from the Barossa Valley in South Australia and its wine name is ‘The Barking Dog’ from Shanahan’s by Wine Maker John Harris.
John named the wine after a favourite saying of his wine making Grandfather “Why bark when you have a dog”, which was a favourite saying of an old boss of mine too.
I secured it at Dan Murphy’s for $AUD 17.99
It’s typical of the GSM breed, and has a beautiful nose and complex palate with the French Hogshead Barrels leaving their print in a good way.
I’m thoroughly enjoying it in every aspect of the experience, and though I am drinking alone the bottle is likely to be finished tonight, unlike last night’s Merlot half of which is in the fridge being preserved for cooking (more on that in a special review on Merlots).
This GSM has earned two Best Value Double Gold Medals at the China Wine and Spirit Awards. At $17.99 it represents good value for a really lovely wine, and in my book is about the right price for the quality.
It won’t be the last time I buy ‘The Barking Dog’.
